The Victory and Winget Mills were constructed on S York Rd just south of Gastonia, NC, in a post-World War I textile mill boom in Gaston County. They were part of a larger conglomeration of mill properties that fueled the growth of Gaston County, providing livelihoods and building neighborhoods and communities around them for decades. Ownership and operations changed hands many times until these buildings wound down operations and fell into states of disuse and dereliction near the end of the 20th century. HELT Design is excited to partner with the new owners of this property, who look to breathe new life into these historic structures for a mix of 21st-century industrial, office, entertainment, and potentially residential uses. In the ultimate vein of Sustainable Development, our client has a clear goal of returning these historic structures to their role as community assets for the immediate surrounding area, Gaston County, and beyond. Infrastructure repairs have been made to stop the reclamation efforts of nature/gravity, and now design and thinking have turned to thoughts for the future. Engagement has been made with Federal and State Historical organizations, and a selective demo has occurred to uncover hidden gems of the original building that could be restored for future uses. All elements will be evaluated for reuse or repurposing on the property, from windows to flooring to the particular brick used in different parts of the buildings. Stay tuned for activity and announcements of redevelopment plans for this historic property.
